Ganglion Cyst

I've had a dorsal ganglion cyst on my right wrist, which has been there for years. It grows and shrinks unpredictably over time, but when it's large (as it is now), it completely blocks the movement of the wrist backwards, because all the little bones that need to move around and get out of each other's way as I bend my wrist backwards are blocked by this lump that takes up so much space.

It's not terribly ugly, and nobody really notices it, but it's much bigger than it looks when my wrist is unflexed, and if you poke around it it's really quite disturbing that something that big actually fits inside my wrist.

Anyway, it's been getting quite bad lately so I made an appointment next wednesday to see a doctor. They might just refer me to an orthopaedic surgeon, but I'm personally hoping they try aspiration, if only to give me a break from putting up with it for the past few months. I've got another one on my left wrist, but it went into hiding somewhere inside the wrist and apart from some slightly restricted movements, it doesn't bother me all that much at the moment.

On a related topic, Spring Break is only 8 days away, and involves going sailing in the Lesser Antilles (St. Lucia to Cariacou and back again in 8 days) with 15 friends on a pair of 40-foot catamarans, and I'd like to have full use of my hand then!

Well I can't really advise because I'm not a doctor - or even remotely related to medicine. In my own reading about Cysts, I found that they're usually just unsightly or unpleasant lumps, and I didn't really care about it.

The reason I had it removed is that when you get it in the wrist, it gets in the way of the movement (for example, you can't do pressups because your wrist won't bend that far back anymore). It's painful when you try because the cyst creates pressure in the wrist and causes bruising internally. So I had very practical reasons for wanting it gone.

In your case, I really don't know what to suggest - I imagine the advice is likely to be, "what would you like to do?"

Hello, it is so nice to find someone who has the same problem as i do as i have about 5 Cysts in my right hand and a couple in my left. As i use my right hand the most, i find i am having severe pain when i type too much or vacume the whole house at once and i just find that the pain is getting too much. I actually went to see a Specialist in Perth Australia and was told that the operation was a huge step and i should be able to put up with the pain. I can't do this for much longer as i left a great career as it was just too painful as it was to do with a lot of typing. Did you end up having the operation and what was the outcome as i really want to take that path so as to live without pain.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Kind Regards,

Stacey Wood.

I have a Voral cyst and I have the same problem when typing for too long. It's my second cyst in a year. Had my first one last year and had it aspirated after a month and then removed surgically because I had pain and numbness. Needless to say that it did come back and facing the same problems. It is fairly smaller then last years, but causes the same problems. Limited movement and strength with pain and numbness starting to come back... I have a brace that I try to wear, but is very uncomfortable for typing.

I've seen doctors, but they keep saying that they can't do anything and I know that it's not true, but to them I'm an insignificant patient and because they have a M.D. they're better then everyone else.

I don't knwo what to do anymore...maybe let the pain and numbness become a part of me is the answer.
